Description: Reverse reads: "The N.C.R. School House. This is where the conventions and salesmanship schools of the National Cash Register Co. are held, as well as many civic gatherings. Admission cannot be charged for any function. Dayton, Ohio- Montgomery County." The NCR School House stood at 1350 S. Main St. The building was constructed in 1912. Although it is in a folder titled "Schools," it was not a school. It appears to have been a theater used by NCR for its employees. The building is no longer standing today. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Carte de visite of General Winfield Scott Hancock, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. A native of Montgomery Square, Pennsylvania, Hancock was considered one of the best military commanders in the Union (nicknamed "Superb Hancock"), though he never rose above corps command. He is best known for his fighting at Gettysburg and Spotsylvania Court House, but also fought at Williamsburg, where he earned his nickname, Fredericksburg, the Wilderness, Chancellorsville, and Petersburg. Many small bridges had been constructed by this time which precluded any large boats from navigating the canal. The Miami and Erie Canal connected the Ohio River in Cincinnati, Ohio and Lake Erie in Toledo, Ohio and was completed in 1845. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. Description: Dated 1911, this photograph shows two men on the St. Louis canal boat on the Miami and Erie Canal in Montgomery County, Ohio. A note on the reverse of the photograph reads "The 'St. Louis', End of an era, Cargo boat built at James Morrison Boat Yard, Dayton, Ohio," and the original description of this photograph reads "This is a picture of the Old Canal Boat named 'St. Louis' taken in 1911." Work began on the Miami and Erie Canal in 1825 and was completed in 1845. During the peak of construction, more than four thousand laborers worked on the canal, generally earning 30 cents per day plus room and board. Many recent immigrants to the United States, especially the Irish, survived thanks to jobs on the canals. Other people, like the residents of the communal society at Zoar, also helped construct canals to assist the survival of their community. Many of Ohio's communities today, including Akron, began as towns for the canal workers. Most canals remained in operation in Ohio until the late 1800s. There is a short stretch in the Muskingum Valley near Zanesville still in operation today. By the 1850s, however, canals were losing business to the railroads. Description: Miamisburgh Mound State Memorial is located on the south side of Dayton, Ohio, in Montgomery County. Thought to be a part of the Adena Culture of the Early Woodland Period, it is about 68 feet high. This is the highest mound in Ohio and the second highest in the Eastern United States. The mound stands on top of a 100 foot ridge along the Great Miami River, making it visible for several miles. This mound is a burial mound standing on about 1 1/2 acres and is about 877 feet in circumference at the base. It is believed to contain about 54,000 cubic yards of earth. The mound may have been built in many layers over several generations. When a leader died, a wooden hut was created for the body. The hut was set on fire and then covered with a layer of soil. As other leaders were buried in this fashion, the mound grew in both width and height.
